10:48 am
>> watch america's book club with stacy schiff sundays at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. eastern and pacific on c-span. >> president trump traveled to japan during his weeklong trip to asia. we will show you his remarks on air force one followed by his arrival to tokyo and his meeting with the japanese emperor. >> could you to -- could you tell us how the meeting went. >> very good, we will see what happens. we will see, they like to do a deal, right now they're paying 50% tariff but we had a great meeting, i want to wish the president a happy birthday.
10:49 am
it's his birthday today. he's a very vigorous guy actually and i was very impressed but today's his birthday so happy birthday. birthday. happy birthday. let him know, please. >> secretary bessent -- pres. trump: he is right here. >> you said you are near a framework -- pres. trump: let me give him a little room. he is doing a good job. we also have marco here. >> can you give us a status on the preliminary talks with the chinese? sec. bessent: we had a good meeting with the vice premier and we have a framework for president trump and president xi. we discussed a wide range of things, from tariffs cannot trade cut fentanyl, substantial
10:50 am
purchase of u.s. agricultural process -- products and rare earths. pres. trump: nothing has been agreed to yet. we feel good. i feel better that this guy has nice, broad shoulders. if the plane makes a big turn or something, i am grabbing his shoulders. marco, come on over here. this is the greatest team ever assembled. if i were not elected president, in my opinion every automobile company in the united states would be bankrupt or close to it and instead they are hitting record highs. their stock is through the roof. and you saw general motors yesterday go up big. it is all because of tariffs. if there were not tariffs, it would be like it has been for the last 30 years, where we lost
10:51 am
about 52% of our automobile manufacturing business. in my opinion, whether now or shortly, if it were not for what i have done as president, every automobile company in america would be a -- bankrupt. they are doing phenomenal business because of tariffs. >> on the plane yesterday, you said about the canada tariffs. can you walk through when you expect those to take effect? pres. trump: ronald reagan loved tariffs. he used them sparingly, which he probably would -- he made a mistake in that. i was the biggest fan around reagan, but on finance and trade , it was not his strong suit but he liked tariffs. they totally changed that to say that he did not because they are catering to the supreme court because canada has been ripping us off for a long time and they are not going to rip us off anymore.
10:52 am
canada has been ripping us off for a long time. one of the most difficult countries to deal with has been canada, as much as i love canada itself. they did a fake ad yesterday. the ronald reagan foundation caught them. i do not like that. that is dirty pool. they should not have done it. they've apologized and they said we are going to take the ad out they did it late. now they took that ad down, so i do not know when it is going to kick in. we will see. i do not want to discuss it. let's go. >> that was an ad run by a provincial candidate in canada. >> whether it is provincial or canada itself, they all knew exactly what it was. the prime minister knew. everybody knew.
10:53 am
i'm not going to be meeting with him for a while. i am happy with the deal we have now. we are going to let it ride. >> you asked about the fed search. where are you? >> we are traveling a lot now. we are going to continue and do a second round. we hope to present a good slate to the president after thanksgiving. it will be his choice. i think he is good. very strong. pres. trump: i am think about marco and jamieson. i am thinking about a lot of people. we do have stephen miller. we have a lot of candidates. i think it is the world's easiest drop but to get it right you have to be smart and we have a person who is not smart right now. he should have been much lower
10:54 am
much sooner. that is why we call him jerome to lake powell. >> the russians said they will test a new missile. is that saber rattling for you? >> they know we have a nuclear submarine, so does it have to go a thousand miles? they are not playing games with us. we are not playing games with them. we test missiles all the time, but we do have a nuclear submarine. we do not need to go a thousand miles. i do not think it is an appropriate thing for putin to be saying. you want to get the war ended, the war that should have taken one week is now in its fourth year. that is what you should do instead of testing missiles. >> should the e.u. use frozen russian assets?
10:55 am
pres. trump: you have to ask the e.u.. i am not involved. >> are you considering potential sanctions against russia? pres. trump: you will find out. >> shipbuilding has been a big part of your trade deals. why is it so important to increase shipbuilding to counter china? pres. trump: because we want more ships. we are going to be back in the shipbuilding industry. we have companies coming into our country now. we have the shipyards available. in world war ii, we were the biggest in the world in shipbuilding and then we went steuben and week and started buying ships from everybody. but we will get that industry back. we were the best at it and we will soon be very good at it, if not the best. we just announced a great friendship. i look forward to meeting the
10:56 am
new prime minister. i hear phenomenal things. she was a great ally and friend of shinzo abe, who was my friend, the former prime minister. he was one of the best. really best. i know they were close and i think philosophically they were close. that really helps japan and the united states. i think she is going to be great. >> which ceos are going to come to your dinner? pres. trump: i would rather not say. we might. that will be one of the things we are discussing. someone reported it has been approved recently. we got an original approval. i expect we will have an approval but i would rather wait until a couple days. it is something we are going to talk about. >> tariffs on china -- is the
10:57 am
understanding from both countries that will remain -- pres. trump: i do not want to tell you with the understanding is. what we understood yesterday or two days ago was not going to be necessarily what it is going to be in two days. we are going to have a great talk. ivy a lot of respect for president -- i have a lot respect for president xi. i think we are going to have a successful transaction for both countries. >> have you been briefed on the incident with the fighter jet? pres. trump: they are going to let me know soon. it could be bad fuel. it is possible it is bad fuel. very unusual that will happen. >> you do not think there is foul play? pres. trump: nothing to hide. we will find out. >> has there been a snag in terms of south korea trade talks? >> just a lot of details -- it
10:58 am
is a complicated deal. i think we are very close. >> do you expect to finalize that on wednesday? sec. bessent: not quite, but the overall framework is we are just getting -- crossing the t's and dotting the i's. that is what ambassador greer's team does. >> there are a few parts. there are national security-related issues and we have some pure trade issues where they have had some nontariff barriers to us for a long time and that is great and there's another piece which is about investment going forward. even more than they have already done it. frankly but how to implement green investment in the best way to make sure -- pres. trump: and especially
10:59 am
toward shipbuilding. we are involved in getting the shipbuilding going again, which we should have never lost. years ago, they lost that. many decades ago. we were number one. we will be number one or right up -- china is making a letter ships. -- lot of ships. they would not if we had that situation will be charged essentially a fee but we are not looking to hurt their shipbuilding. >> are you concerned that the -- >> have decrease in -- the koreans asked for any visa guarantee? pres. trump: i was very much opposed. when they come in and they are making complex machinery, they are going to have to bring some people in, at least at the initial phase. in that case, it was batteries. batteries are complex and dangerous to make. you cannot just pick people off the unemployment line and say we opened up a battery factory. so we have an understanding.
11:00 am
this is with the world. this is not just with south korea. when they come into our country, we have factories being built by foreign interests. when they come in, some of these factories make complex, highly sophisticated equipment. they have to bring people in with them for a period of time. they will teach our people how to do it, but they are going to need expertise to be successful and we are going to let people know here and i letting them know now that when they come into our country we can expect to see them bring with them some talented people that have been doing it for many years. they will teach our people how to do it. our people will be as good as they are within a period of time and it will be a phaseout but we want them to bring in experts and that is the way it is. >> what visa with a come under?
11:01 am
-- would they come under? pres. trump: we are doing a new plan for that. let's say we have a massive number of chip companies, one of the biggest in the world coming in. you cannot expect them to make unbelievably complex chips and computers and other things and pick people off the unemployment line that have not worked in five years, but we are going to so i want them to come in with talented people and they are going to -- it will be a phaseout. >> you said you are opposed to the way the rate in georgia -- pres. trump: i was opposed to getting them out and before they got out they were pretty well set. before they got out i said they could stay. they are going to be coming back. what a great question that is. i love that question. i want to congratulate the victor.
11:02 am
he was a big victor. he had a lot of help from us. i gave him an endorsement, very strong endorsement, and it was unexpected to have a victory. some people thought it would be hard to win. he won by a lot. so argentina was a great thing. i give everybody credit for that because we are sticking with a lot of the countries in south america and we are getting a real strong handle on south america, including the fact that we do not want their drugs. we do not want drugs coming into our country. >> with the changes to beef purchases? pres. trump: we will take care of our ranchers. we have two situations. ranchers for 35 years have done poorly, the cattle people. they have done poorly and now they are doing well but the
11:03 am
price is up, so what i can see happening as we are going to take some beef because we have to get the price down. most prices are down. if you look at energy, i have things down but beef is high and the cattle ranchers are doing good. they backed me from day one. we are going to make sure they do not get hurt but we have to also make sure we get the prices down. i want to get the prices down like i did with lots of others. we had a couple when i first took over that were double and quadruple what they were. that was biden's fault. a lot of this is, too. we are going to get the price of beef down and make sure cattle ranchers do not get hurt. >> you talked about north korea on your way here. have you heard anything? pres. trump: i have not said anything, but i would love to meet with him if he would like to meet. i got along great with kim jong-un. if you wants to meet, i will be
11:04 am
in south korea. >> would you extend your trip in asia to meet with him? pres. trump: i had not thought of it, but i think the answer would be sure. our last stop. it is pretty easy to do. i would do it. >> what is the u.s. have to offer? pres. trump: i did not say i was meeting with him, but if you would like to meet i am around. >> at this point? pres. trump: we have sanctions. that is pretty big to start with. that is about as big as you get. >> anything as an inducement? pres. trump: i just had a good relationship with him. i would love to see him if he wants to and even gets this message. we have not mentioned at. if he would like to meet, i would love to meet him >> flights being halted at lax due to shortages of air traffic controllers. pres. trump: the democrats would
11:05 am
just do a simple extension that is the best way to the democrats are holding it up. they want one point two $5 trillion for people who came out of prisons or illegal aliens who come into our country. that will really hurt the health care we have in our country and we would like to see better health care. we are not looking to do that. the democrats can solve that problem with air traffic control. all you have to do is say the country is open. we only need five votes. let's see what happens. i would imagine -- not only the controllers but other people, too. >> how is your relationship with elon? pres. trump: i think it is good. you saw that during charlie'sc'i came up, i like elon i've always like elon. >> have you talked to him since the memorial.
11:06 am
pres. trump: on and off a little, he's a nice guy he's a very capable guy and i've always liked him, he had a bad spell, he had a bad periods, he had a bad moment, a stupid moment in his life i'm sure he did tell you that but i like elon and i suspect i will always like him. >> continued protests outside of immigration centers in chicago. pres. trump: when people come into our country illegally especially in terms of speed the very bad ones, murderers came in through the biden administration, we had very tight borders now but we had open borders, incredibly we had open borders. what were they thinking? we have murderers, over 11,000 murderers many of them murdered more than one person, we want those people out, we want people that were in prisons we want them to go back to their prayer is not our praise and, we want
11:07 am
them out we will get them out, all out. it's really a terrible mistake that was made. when you think of it so much of the time our time is spent on that subject and it's a big subject, it's probably 20 or 45 million people and of the 25 million people, millions of people should not be here. all of them should not be here if they came in illegally but we have to get the criminals out, washington, dc is doing great, memphis is starting to do great, we started there weeks ago. any place we touch is going to do well. if i were a governor i would say please get your people in whether it's national guard or the military get them in. as you know we have been winning those cases. i'd like to do it but i have a lot of very important people that are really into san francisco that are really trying to do it themselves. i said we can do it better
11:08 am
because we have a stronger tough group, a group that has powers that other people don't have local you don't have the powers of the federal government has. we can do a better job of it faster but i uh listen to the few people, jensen is fantastic from nvidia and mark from time magazine a lot of other things he's a good man and they would love to give it a shot and i say go ahead and do it and i would've done that with chicago. chicago was very far along we have to do something with that i have a lot of friends influence will in chicago, they told me maybe you do the same thing but we have to save chicago immediately, we can do that pretty easily but we have to get in quickly. >> what you think the state of the fiscal situation is there. pres. trump: we have the all-time expert here, right now
11:09 am
we've made a lot of money based on that election because the bonds of gone up, their whole debt rating has gone up, that election made a lot of money for the united states. we are not in that for money per se and you look at the value of the bonds. sec. bessent: i think president millet will expand his coalition and they have but the argentinian people have spoken, they know the u.s. is their ally thanks to president trump we are behind them and then they are going to be able to fix their fiscal and keep on the road he's working against 100 years of bad policies and he's can up ray, thanks for support from the united states. pres. trump: and we are helping other south american countries as well. i think there'll be a good
11:10 am
chance. >> we think the market this was a bridge, we've bridged it based on president trump's support doing better than anyone ever expected, it wasn't a fair election because we were running against donald trump and now i think the market is going to take care of itself it's going to have a lot of confidence in his policies and the way forward. pres. trump: the polls really got it wrong, that was an election they say would be lost and not only was it one but it was won by a lot. and maybe we did help out, i hope we have. >> over the weekend israel assassinated military official of the palestinian islamic -- does that violate the cease-fire law or as a being treated as a separate thing. sec. rubio: israel didn't self
11:11 am
its right to self-defense. they's obligations from both sides. we also like to see hamas speed up the return of hostage bodies with two americans included. but we don't see that as a violation of the cease-fire. there's an imminent threat to israel. all the mediators agree to that. pres. trump: how transparent is the trump administration? you have scott, you have scott, you have jamison, you of marco, we are not saying please don't answer this question. you can ask anything you want. there's never been anything like this. do you agree with that? >> you said five fed candidates that's waller, rider thank you. >> he likes what he's doing. pres. trump: you couldn't pull
11:12 am
them out of there no matter what. it's like caroline house caroline doing. you say she's doing good or just ok. i think she's doing very good. without her we wouldn't be here right now. she's doing great. i'd say may be by the end of the year. i think by the end of the year. early next year. we want to get too laid out as soon as possible. we want to be too early were too late. >> steve bannon said there could be plans for you to be able to run and potentially win in 2020 eight, is that something you be willing to challenge. pres. trump: i haven't really thought about it we have some very good people as you head out. but i have the best poll numbers i've ever had, i just saw -- salt eight and a ninth is coming. but we just did, you know we just left and when you look at
11:13 am
the treaty we just did, thousands of people were already shot and when you look at what we just did, it's pretty amazing. a lot of good credit. i really have to thank malaysia for that because the prime minister and everybody really helped put the two countries together. it was quite uh a great peace treaty. that was one of eight anduh it makes me feel good, millions of people be saved, i saved the lives of millions of people, that's what's so important. >> you set for 2028 they are very good people. pres. trump: we have great people i don't have to get into that. we have jd obviously, the vice president is great, marco is great, i think uh i'm not sure anyone would run against us.
11:14 am
i think it would be unstoppable i really do. i would love to do it -- i have the best numbers ever, the best numbers. you read it. am i not ruling it out? you'll have to tell me. we have a great group of people which they don't. they have jasmine crockett a low iq person, they have uh -- aoc is low iq. have her pass like the exams that i decided to take when i was at walter reed. i said those are very hard uh, they are really aptitude tests i guess. let aoc go against trump, let jazmine go against trump. i don't think jasmine -- the first couple of questions are easy, a tiger, an elephant, a giraffe you know. when you get up to five or six and up to 10 and 20 and 25, they
11:15 am
could not come close to answering any of those questions. >> did you get an mri? pres. trump: i did it was perfect. i mean i gave you -- i gave you the full results. we had an mri and uh the machine, the whole thing and it was perfect. you could ask the doctors. in fact we have doctors traveling with us. i think they give you a very conclusive -- nobody has ever given you reports like i give you and if i didn't think it was going to be good either i would let you know negatively, i wouldn't run. i would do something. but the doctor said some of the best reports for the age, some of the best report they've ever seen. >> how you might try to serve a third term. pres. trump: i'd be allowed to do that. >> is at the white house counsel saying it's her position. pres. trump: i wouldn't, i
11:16 am
wouldn't -- because it's too cute. i think the people wouldn't like that it's too cute, it wouldn't be right. >> you are personally the most difficult shot -- what's the most difficult shot for you in golf right now. pres. trump: it used to be chipping but i've become a very good chipper. um, all pretty good i'm a pretty good golfer. i've won 38 club championships, it's pretty good. pretty much i hit on very solid -- very consistent, pretty long i'm in a hit the ball pretty long. gary is 90 and he's shot 70 with me the last which was pretty amazing. putting is pretty good. used to be i would say putting used to be the best but i would
11:17 am
say putting is pretty good. >> there were some questions on the vietnam field, why was that change made? >> there's a handful of things like coffee etc., type of stuff in the united states, so it makes sense if people can a deal with this we will give them a good deal but overall 20% on vietnam. pres. trump: we want to get coffee down a little bit. >> it was a 20 on a knob to zero. >> brought to whatever congressional level of tariff. we have a huge deficit with vietnam and so they've taken down all their tariffs to zero on everything, all the nontariff barriers are gone with all of our standards and all of that. pres. trump: by the way people set impossible to get. >> so we just have a few items like that that we can grow an extract from the ground.
11:18 am
that kind of thing. >> how worried are you about the risk of trend shifts vietnam. mr. greer: they have to agree to a duty evasion with us and if we catch them doing it we can charge an additional. that's an executive order that's already in place. pres. trump: you guys have a very interesting couple of days. japan and then we have south korea but we have china coming it's good to be very interesting. i have a lot of credit -- respect for present xi jinping and we are going to i think we will go away with a deal but um i really feel good, our country is doing so well economically, so incredibly well. the democrats should let it open -- i guess they don't do that. you know on the macro scale it's not happening -- having that kind of an effect. we just want people to get paid. how about the man that put up 130 million dollars to make sure
11:19 am
our military get paid. i won't tell you but this is a person that called me that said sir i'd like to make a contribution of any difference needed for the united states military. i said that could be a big number. and we worked it out it was about 130 million dollars and they wrote a check for 130 million dollars because he is an unbelievable patriot and that's what it's all about so we will have a good time over the next few days. i haven't been watching it too much the world series, i'm disappointed that input pete rose in. i said put pete rosen before he dies, they didn't do it. with all the gambling you see now give me a break. i asked the commission put pete rosen commissioner, long before he died. like a year before he died they didn't get it done. should have gotten it done. pete rose was a great baseball
11:20 am
player. >> you said yesterday you might invite china to mar-a-lago. when would that be? pres. trump: sometime after -- i'm can ago i'm pretty much agree on going to china in the earlier part of the year and president she will be coming in maybe washington or palm beach or some place after that. >> do you plan on visiting them? pres. trump: we have a good relationship with vietnam and they've made a lot of money with the united states over the years from presidents and really didn't know what they were doing. but now as you know vietnam is charging us tariffs and that's a big step. and based on that i wouldn't. >> and vassar greer launched a 301 reneging on its phase i deal. as a part of these talks would you pause that, how connected is that. pres. trump: it may be part of the talks but it may be part of the negotiation.
11:21 am
mr. greer: that was a separate deal from before. that's continuing but. pres. trump: if all works out well. i think so. i have a feeling they'll talk us through. >> you really get along. could you elaborate on that. what about your relationship is so great. >> i just like him. i was hurt pretty badly by covid when covid came in to wuhan everybody knows that. i always said right from the beginning so that had an impact for a lot of reasons. we didn't get to speak as much because we were all busy getting out of that nightmare but no i think i have a very good relationship. and i would say likewise thank
